My first race MTB.
I bought the team Marin back in 1993 from Fred Williams Cycles in Wolverhampton. I was doing a PhD at the time, had started racing with the University MTB club and was doing a lot of training and rides on Cannock Chase.
I’d applied for a post-doc post in Seattle, which had my experience written all over it, but when I wasn’t offered it I’d decided to spent most of my savings on a new race bike and a pair of Pace suspension forks. It was a win-win.
I had lusted after the Team Issue (Titanium) frame but it was way out of my price range so I had to settle with the top of the range steel framed Team with full XT. My racing, and indeed my life, improved the moment I got used to riding it. Compared to the Giant I was riding, it was like a thoroughbred horse, nervous and lively and very responsive.
Parts have been upgraded with the most recent being a new Chris King headset when the original died back in 2010. The hubs both cracked so were replaced and it’s on the third set of rims.
